I barely had time to make it out of my bedroom when the front door flew open, Tom already tired of pounding on it. The alarm blared through the halls, causing Essie to rush out of her own room. We had both retired for the evening, and my ex’s presence was jarring.

“Tom, what the hell?” I snapped, striding toward him to disarm the system. My long tresses were still wrapped in a towel turban, my ex’s timing always impeccable.

“You took Lexie to another country without telling me?” he yelled. “Are you out of your mind?”

I stared at him, dimly amused by his spin.

“Well?”

I checked my own temper and smiled.

“First of all, Toronto is barely out of the States,” I began.

“Don’t give me that, Steph. You brought our teenage daughter to stay with you and your gigolo, and you didn’t even have the sense to tell me?”

I snorted.

“You really do need to look up the word ‘gigolo’ in the dictionary,” I told him pityingly. “Yes, I took my teenaged daughter, whose custody I share with you, into another country for my visitation week. We had a vacation. What’s the problem?”

He scoffed, throwing his hands up in the air. “I’m sure if the roles were reversed, you would have nothing to say about it.”

I mused on that for a moment.

That would never happen because you’re too busy spending all your money on your new wife to think about taking your kids anywhere.

“See? You have nothing to say! What the hell has gotten into you lately? The Stephanie Anderson I know would—”

“Let me stop you right there,” I cut him off. “I’m not Stephanie Anderson. I’m Steph Dubois, and I don’t think you ever knew me at all, Tom. If I want to take my daughter on vacation, I’m well within my rights to do that. I don’t need your permission.”

He gaped at me, unaccustomed to me cutting him off and retorting.

“Not according to the parenting agreement,” he snarled. “You need to inform me any time you’re taking our minor child out of the country. Read what it says!”

He pivoted without giving me a chance to answer, slamming my door with such intensity, the pictures shook on my walls.

“He is a piece of work,” Essie hissed, her anger viable. “Why don’t you just put a spell on him and get him out of your life forever?”

I pursed my lips, her suggestion more than appealing in that moment.

“No,” I muttered, turning away. “He’s still the father of my children. And in a couple of months, I won’t have to worry about these temper tantrums anymore.”

Essie’s brow rose. “You don’t think so?”

“Lexie will be eighteen soon. Then he has no say in anything she does.” I paused, chewing on my lower lip.

“Harumph. Do you believe that will stop Thomas from acting like a complete and utter twat?”

“Probably not, but there will be no legal recourse for him when he does.” I exhaled and rubbed my temples. “In the meantime, I can’t bring Lexie with me to Toronto.
